Microsoft Unveils Majorana 2 Quantum Chip with 1000x Qubit Stability
Microsoft has announced its next-generation topological quantum chip, Majorana 2, claiming over 1000x improvement in qubit stability and qubit lifetimes exceeding 20 seconds. The company aims to build a scalable quantum computer by 2029.
Microsoft has introduced the Majorana 2, a topological quantum chip featuring a lead-based material stack that increases qubit stability more than 1,000 times compared to the previous generation. According to the company, the qubit lifetime in Majorana 2 exceeds 20 seconds, with some instances reaching up to one minute — a dramatic leap from the 1 ms to 12 ms range of the earlier Majorana 1 chip.
The chip also achieves operation durations of 1 microsecond and a qubit size of approximately 0.01 mm. Microsoft expects to deliver a scalable quantum computer by 2029, roughly halving its earlier timeline. The announcement underscores the company's progress in topological quantum computing, which aims to create more stable and error-resistant qubits.
