Ethereum Foundation Interim Director Warns Toxic MEV Risks, Encrypted Mempools Not a Panacea

Ethereum Foundation interim executive director Bastian Aue outlined a mandate execution plan, warning that toxic MEV could become the next major front in the cypherpunk war if users rely on a limited set of infrastructure intermediaries.

Ethereum Foundation interim executive director Bastian Aue presented a mandate execution plan during a recent update. He highlighted the risk that toxic maximal extractable value (MEV) could emerge as the next major front in the cypherpunk war if Ethereum users become dependent on a narrow group of infrastructure intermediaries for value transfer.

Aue specifically pointed to dangers from privileged access to transaction flow, cartelization of builders, reliance on trusted relays, and opaque routing. He cautioned that encrypted mempools are not a universal solution—while they can conceal the flow of pending transactions, they may simply shift advantages to new privileged participants.

The remarks come amid ongoing debates about MEV and decentralization in Ethereum's block-building process.
