China Leads Global Nuclear Reactor Construction with 39 Units Under Way

China now has 39 nuclear reactors under construction, more than the next 12 countries combined, with an average build time of just 2.8 years.

China is currently constructing 39 nuclear reactors, a number that exceeds the combined total of the next 12 countries. India and Russia follow with 8 and 7 reactors under construction, respectively, both less than half of China's count.

The average age of China's reactor projects is about 2.8 years since construction began, compared to a global average of 5.8 years. The global figure is inflated by long-delayed projects, such as India's 22-year timeline and Brazil's 16-year timeline.

In contrast, the United States has no large commercial nuclear reactors currently under construction. China's pipeline is the largest in the world, reflecting its aggressive push in nuclear energy.
