According to TD Securities, Canadian retail sales rose 1.0% month-over-month in May, matching the consensus expectation but coming in slightly below the firm's own forecast.

The gains were broad-based, led by gasoline stations, motor vehicles and parts, general merchandise, and sporting goods. The data underpins a modest contribution to consumption in the second quarter.

TD Securities' report adds color to the recent economic picture, which may influence Bank of Canada policy expectations and the Canadian dollar.
