BIS Warns AI Investment Boom Creates Macro-Financial Risks

The Bank for International Settlements warns that the AI-driven investment boom is itself creating macro-financial risks, including debt-financed infrastructure, inflated valuations, and fiscal deterioration.

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has released its annual report, warning that the global investment surge in artificial intelligence, which supported the world economy in 2025, is now generating its own macro-financial risks.

The BIS report highlights several concerns: debt-financed AI infrastructure, overvalued companies, a rise in private lending, and opaque deals between hyperscalers, chipmakers, and AI labs.

Analysts at the BIS identified four key pressure points:

  • Persistent inflation threat
  • Sustainability of AI investments
  • Growing financial vulnerabilities
  • Worsening fiscal positions
