US Airlines Fuel Costs Surge 78% in April Amid Iran War, Fares Jump 20.7%

US airlines paid $6.5 billion in fuel costs in April 2025, a 78% increase year-over-year, driving a 20.7% rise in fares. Globally, carriers face an estimated $100 billion in extra fuel costs in 2026.

The US Department of Transportation reported that US airlines' fuel costs surged 78% in April compared to a year earlier, totaling $6.5 billion. The spike is attributed to the ongoing Iran War disrupting global oil supplies.

This cost increase directly contributed to a 20.7% year-over-year rise in airline fares, as reflected in the April CPI inflation data. Globally, the airline industry is now estimated to face an additional $100 billion in fuel costs for 2026 alone due to the conflict.

The combination of soaring fuel expenses and higher ticket prices underscores the broader inflationary impact of the geopolitical turmoil on the travel sector.
