UK CPI Holds at 2.8% in May, Well Above BoE Target

UK annual CPI inflation remained at 2.8% in May, unchanged from April, according to ONS data released Wednesday. The reading is significantly above the Bank of England's 2% target.

GBPUSD

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported Wednesday that the UK headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.8% year-on-year in May, matching the April figure. The data keeps inflation well above the Bank of England's 2% target.

The steady inflation rate suggests persistent price pressures in the economy, keeping the BoE under pressure to maintain a restrictive monetary policy stance. Markets will watch for any commentary from policymakers on the timing of potential rate adjustments.

The pound's reaction may be tempered by the lack of change, but the elevated level relative to the central bank's goal remains a key factor for GBP direction.
