Oman Proposes Strait of Hormuz Fee Mechanism to Iran

Oman has presented Iran with a proposal to establish a joint regional mechanism that could impose fees on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for nearly 20% of global energy supplies.

According to a Gulf source, Oman put forward the plan to Iran, aiming to create a collaborative framework for managing the vital waterway. The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly a fifth of the world's oil and gas tanker traffic, making any disruption or cost change significant for global energy markets.

Details on the proposed mechanism remain limited, including how fees would be structured, collected, and enforced. The initiative surfaces amid longstanding regional tensions and efforts to safeguard shipping lanes.

Further talks or disclosures are awaited to gauge the proposal’s reception and potential impact on transit costs.
