HSBC: RBNZ Tightening Cycle Supports NZD/USD

HSBC strategists expect the New Zealand Dollar to remain supported by the RBNZ's aggressive hiking path and improving growth data, with quarterly 25bp rate hikes projected to 3.50% by Q3.

NZDUSD

HSBC strategists see the New Zealand Dollar (NZD) as underpinned by a combination of strengthening economic growth data and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's (RBNZ) aggressive tightening cycle. According to the bank, the RBNZ has already begun raising interest rates, and HSBC Economics forecasts further 25 basis point hikes each quarter, bringing the cash rate to 3.50% by the third quarter.

The outlook suggests sustained support for NZD/USD, as the central bank's hawkish stance contrasts with more cautious monetary policies in other major economies. The positive growth backdrop in New Zealand further bolsters the currency's appeal.

Traders should monitor upcoming RBNZ meetings and economic releases for confirmation of the pace and magnitude of the tightening cycle.
