EU Parliament Committee Approves Digital Euro Bill

The European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs voted 43-14 to approve a digital euro bill. The digital euro would be an electronic form of central bank money issued by the ECB, with mandatory acceptance for most businesses and storage limits for citizens.

The European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) voted 43 in favor, 14 against, and 1 abstention to approve a bill on the digital euro. The legislation paves the way for a central bank digital currency (CBDC) issued by the European Central Bank (ECB).

Under the proposed framework, most businesses would be required to accept the digital euro as a means of payment. To mitigate financial stability risks, the bill also introduces a holding limit for individual citizens.

The approval marks a key legislative step, though the digital euro still requires a full European Parliament vote and final adoption by EU member states before launch.
