Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has criticized the trend of crypto projects moving away from blockchain to focus on artificial intelligence, describing the idea of "leaving crypto for AI" as a mistake and an example of zero-sum thinking.
According to Armstrong, the distributed ledger is a general-purpose technology comparable to electricity and the internet. He believes blockchain does not need to compete with new trends but will instead serve as the underlying foundation for future products.
The executive also pointed to the growing role of autonomous AI agents. Over time, he expects these agents to handle an increasing number of daily transactions, trade, act as advisors, raise funds for new projects, and take on tasks such as tax planning, portfolio rebalancing, and bill payments — all on blockchain rails.
