Australia's Trade Balance Swings to A$3,018M Deficit in May, Misses Expectations

Australia's trade balance turned negative in May, posting a deficit of A$3,018 million against the previous surplus and market consensus, pressuring AUD/USD.

AUDUSD

Australia's trade balance shifted to a deficit of A$3,018 million month-on-month in May, reversing from a surplus of A$1,791 million in the prior reading. The figure came in well below the market consensus, which had anticipated another surplus.

The data, released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Thursday, marks the first deficit in recent months. The weaker-than-expected trade performance is likely to weigh on the Australian dollar, with AUD/USD facing selling pressure as traders reassess the currency's outlook amid deteriorating external demand.
