Bank Indonesia Governor’s Surprise Resignation Adds to Rupiah Pressure

The unexpected exit of Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo, following other senior departures, is fuelling doubts about policy continuity and institutional credibility, Commerzbank’s Moses Lim says. The Indonesian rupiah is already trading near historic lows against the US dollar.

The sudden resignation of Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo, coming on the heels of earlier high-profile departures, is amplifying concerns over the central bank’s ability to maintain a steady policy course, according to Commerzbank analyst Moses Lim. The shake‑up undermines institutional credibility at a time when the rupiah is already under heavy depreciation pressure.

Lim noted that the leadership void raises questions about how the new monetary policy committee will navigate persistent external headwinds and domestic inflation risks. The rupiah has been hovering near all‑time lows against the greenback, making the central bank’s policy signals even more critical for market stability.

The market is now watching for any emergency measures or verbal intervention from Bank Indonesia to stem further rupiah weakness. Without a clear commitment to price stability, the currency could face additional selling pressure in the near term.
