Yen Breaks 163 per Dollar, Lowest Since 1986

The Japanese yen weakened past 163 per US dollar for the first time in nearly 40 years, signaling exhaustion of easy policy options for Tokyo.

USDJPY

The yen slid through the 163 mark against the dollar on Monday, touching levels not seen since 1986. The move extends a long-running sell-off driven by wide interest-rate differentials between Japan and the US.

Traders are now watching for possible intervention from Japanese authorities, but the post notes that "Japan runs out of easy answers" — implying limited tools remain to stem the decline. The break below 163 is no longer a simple milestone in a carry trade narrative; it reflects deeper structural challenges for the yen.
