Trump Administration Asks OpenAI to Limit GPT-5.6 Release Over Safety Fears

The Trump administration has requested that OpenAI not release GPT-5.6 widely due to safety concerns, with the model initially only available to a limited number of clients.

The White House's Office of the National Cyber Director and Office of Science and Technology Policy have asked OpenAI to delay a broad rollout of GPT-5.6 while the administration develops a framework for testing and evaluating the safety of new AI models.

According to media reports, OpenAI has not publicly commented on the limited release, but The Information claims CEO Sam Altman informed employees of the decision. Reuters corroborated the request for a phased deployment, citing a source familiar with the matter.

The move reflects growing regulatory scrutiny over the pace of AI development and its potential risks.
