Retail Investors Pour $150 Billion Into US Equity ETFs, Second Highest on Record

Retail investors bought over $150 billion of the 100 largest US equity ETFs in the past month, the second-highest monthly total on record, only below December's $170 billion. Purchases have more than quadrupled since March. Corporate bond ETF buying also neared record levels.

Retail investors' risk appetite has surged dramatically. According to data cited by The Kobeissi Letter, individuals purchased more than $150 billion of the 100 largest US equity exchange-traded funds over the last month, marking the second-highest reading on record. The only larger monthly total was $170 billion in December last year.

Monthly retail purchases of these ETFs have more than quadrupled since March, indicating a sharp acceleration in retail participation. Additionally, individual investors bought over $20 billion of the 110 largest US corporate bond ETFs in the same period, near the highest on record. Similar levels of corporate bond ETF buying were last seen in February and October 2024.

The data points to a persistent inflow of retail capital into US markets, reflecting elevated risk appetite across both equities and fixed income.
