RBA Pause Risk Drags Australian Dollar Lower

The Australian dollar weakened as RBA Governor Bullock signaled patience despite a hawkish bias, pointing to softer domestic demand and labor conditions.

The Australian dollar underperformed on Thursday as Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Michele Bullock balanced a hawkish stance with a message of patience. According to BBH strategist Elias Haddad, Bullock noted that domestic demand and labour conditions are easing, fueling speculation that the RBA may hold rates steady.

This cautious tone, even while retaining a tightening bias, has raised the risk of a prolonged pause. Markets interpreted the comments as reducing the odds of another near-term hike, weighing on the aussie.

The currency slipped against its major counterparts, with AUDUSD moving lower in early trade. The focus now shifts to upcoming economic data to gauge whether the RBA’s patient approach will extend through the coming months.
