France Records ~1,000 Excess Deaths from Record Heatwave

French health authorities have reported approximately 1,000 excess deaths since June 24, attributed to the prolonged heatwave that has swept across western Europe. The elderly and individuals with pre-existing health conditions have been among the hardest hit.

Temperatures exceeded 40°C in large parts of the country, putting significant strain on hospitals and emergency services. The heatwave has since shifted eastward.

This marks one of the deadliest heat events in recent years, highlighting the broader macroeconomic risks associated with extreme weather events.
