Fed Expected to Hold Rates in July, Focus Stays on Data

BNY strategists see the Fed keeping rates unchanged at the July meeting, with the decision described as a close call. Dollar traders remain highly sensitive to incoming economic data.

Strategists at BNY Mellon, John Velis and David Tam, anticipate that the Federal Reserve will leave the federal funds rate unchanged at the July meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). They characterized the decision as a close call, underscoring the high level of uncertainty surrounding the policy outlook.

This expectation places even greater importance on incoming economic data for dollar traders, who are already attuned to any signals that could shift the rate trajectory. The Fed's data-dependent stance means that reports on inflation, employment, and growth will be scrutinized for any hint of a future move.
