Europe's LNG Dependence on US Hits Near-Record ~60% of Imports

The US now supplies roughly 60% of Europe's LNG imports, near an all-time high, as the bloc's energy security increasingly ties to American gas.

European reliance on US liquefied natural gas has reached historic levels, with American LNG now accounting for approximately 60% of total European LNG imports. This figure is close to the all-time peak of 64% recorded in April, which followed the closure of the Strait of Hormuz that disrupted supplies from Qatar and the UAE.

Since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Europe's US LNG share has increased by 20 percentage points as the region shifted away from Russian pipeline gas. The US now supplies 26% of total EU gas imports — including both LNG and pipeline — second only to Norway.

As Europe prepares to refill storage tanks ahead of winter, dependence on US gas is expected to deepen further in coming months, making European energy security directly reliant on American supplies.
