CFTC data shows EUR and JPY bearish positioning hits fresh extremes

The latest CFTC Commitments of Traders report reveals that speculative selling in the euro and Japanese yen pushed positioning to new bearish extremes, while WTI crude oil saw short covering despite falling prices.

EURUSDUSDJPY

The latest CFTC Commitments of Traders data highlighted a deepening of bearish FX positioning. Speculative accounts extended net short positions in both the euro and the Japanese yen to fresh extremes, underscoring strong directional conviction against the two major currencies.

Amid the FX moves, cross-asset signals diverged. WTI crude oil positioning improved through short covering, even as spot prices declined sharply over the reporting period. Meanwhile, net short positions in VIX futures retreated, suggesting that bets on further equity volatility were trimmed as market volatility moved.

The positioning extremes in EUR and JPY come against a backdrop of diverging central bank outlooks and shifting risk sentiment, according to the report.
