BoC Holds Steady as Core Inflation Stays Contained Despite Headline Rise

National Bank of Canada analysts note that headline inflation rose to 3.2% in May, but the Bank of Canada remains patient due to contained core inflation. Gasoline and food drove the increase.

According to analysts Matthieu Arseneau and Alexandra Ducharme of National Bank of Canada, Canada's headline inflation accelerated to 3.2% in May, breaching the Bank of Canada's target range. The uptick was primarily fueled by higher gasoline and food prices.

Despite the headline surge, the BoC is expected to maintain its current policy stance, as core inflation remains within manageable levels. This patience suggests the central bank sees no immediate need to tighten further, supporting a steady outlook for the Canadian dollar.
