Bitcoin Could Be First Target of Quantum Computing Threat, CEO Says

Quantum Xchange CEO Eddie Zervigon warns that cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin could be the first to face a practical quantum computing threat as hackers target blockchain encryption. Deutsche Digital Assets also highlights Bitcoin's slow governance as a key vulnerability.

Quantum Xchange CEO Eddie Zervigon cautioned that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies could be the initial target of practical quantum computing attacks as the technology becomes capable of breaking complex encryption. “Cryptocurrencies are the canary in the coal mine,” he added.

Zervigon suggested that due to their decentralized nature, blockchain protocols would likely be the first line of assault. A successful breach, he noted, would act as a clear indicator that a cryptographically relevant quantum computer has emerged.

Meanwhile, analysts at Deutsche Digital Assets emphasized that Bitcoin's primary vulnerability in the quantum context is not algorithmic weakness, but its sluggish governance. Unlike traditional financial systems, implementing necessary upgrades in the Bitcoin network can take an extended period.
