Will ‘Clocking Off’ Become a Distant Memory for Traders?

Exchanges and brokers are pushing deeper into round-the-clock trading, with CME's crypto desks, Robinhood's retail plans and SEC rule changes all extending market hours — even as overnight equity volumes stay thin.

The trading week is steadily losing its edges. Among the year's most consequential moves, CME Group shifted its crypto futures and options to continuous trading in May, leaving only a weekly maintenance break and aligning regulated institutional derivatives more closely with how the underlying crypto market already operates.

Demand showed up quickly. CME said its first six weekends produced $1 billion of crypto futures and options volume, while first-half crypto derivatives average daily volume rose 44% year-on-year to 280,000 contracts — evidence, the exchange argues, that longer hours generate new risk-management activity rather than simply spreading existing flow thinner. Regulators have moved in step: at a roundtable on 24-hour trading preparations, SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce said the commission approved changes extending operating hours for US equity securities information processors and modified the market-wide limit-up-limit-down plan for extended sessions. 24X is targeting December for an expanded session, while CME is winding down its 24/7 market plan over weekend staffing.

Overnight Volumes Remain Small

Equity liquidity outside regular hours is still modest. The SEC's September analysis found August overnight equity ADV of 144.6 million shares, or $7.4 billion, down 27% month-on-month in shares and 32% in dollar terms. Extended-hours activity remains under 1% of total NMS stock trading and is concentrated in a handful of names, with thinner, more fragmented books, wider spreads and greater volatility. 24X's own data on 2 October showed roughly 8.64 million shares, heavily weighted toward leveraged ETFs such as SOXL and SOXS, Nvidia and volatile smaller stocks — a market for traders with an immediate reason to act.

Robinhood has been the most aggressive broker. It already offers selected stocks and ETFs 24 hours a day, five days a week, with overnight trading from 8 pm to 4 am ET, and has announced plans for 24/7 trading in selected equities. It also intends to become the first US broker to allow trading of American stocks on Saturdays, is launching prediction markets around company earnings and is rolling out eight crypto perpetual futures through Bitstamp infrastructure. August equity notional volume reached $335 billion, up 68% year-on-year.

FX offers a template, since it already trades around the clock on weekdays. 24 Exchange's NDF business averaged $9.5 billion a day in July, up 139% year-on-year, before easing to $8.29 billion in September — a sign that activity migrates across time zones rather than vanishing.

SEC Chairman Paul Atkins has said continuous trading lets investors react faster and reduce overnight risk, warning that waiting for Monday's 9:30 am open can mean missed opportunities. Peirce, however, notes many participants view extended hours as an inevitable complication. The likely competitive edge is no longer market access alone, but knowing when and where liquidity actually sits.
