Incident Recovery Update - April 16, 2026

Drift Protocol revealed a recovery framework backed by Tether and partners, including a $127.5M contribution from Tether, to address $295M in losses from an April 1 exploit, alongside plans for a security overhaul and migration to USDT settlement.

Drift Protocol, a Solana-based decentralized exchange, released an incident recovery update on April 16 detailing a proposed $147.5 million user recovery package and a comprehensive security revamp following an exploit on April 1 that drained approximately $295 million in user assets.

The recovery framework is anchored by a collaboration with Tether, which is proposed to contribute up to $127.5 million. Additional partners have committed $20 million. The support package includes a $100 million revenue-linked credit facility, an ecosystem grant, and loans to market makers. The funds will be channeled into a dedicated recovery pool, with exchange revenue also directed toward covering outstanding losses over time. Drift is working with law enforcement and blockchain forensics firms to track and recover stolen assets, with any recovered funds added to the pool.

To facilitate distribution, Drift will issue a separate, transferable recovery token to affected users, representing a claim on the recovery pool. Details on the token mechanics are expected soon.

Security Overhaul and Relaunch

Drift is undergoing a full protocol reboot with security as the foundation. Before relaunch, every component will pass two independent audits. Ottersec is redesigning and auditing the codebase, while Asymmetric is advising on operational security practices to prevent a repeat of the April 1 vulnerability.

The protocol will introduce a new community-governed multisig for managing core assets, with signers drawn from Solana infrastructure, DeFi, security, and liquidity providers. All signers must use dedicated signing devices, and transaction content will be independently verified before execution. Timelocks and real-time alerts will be enforced on critical actions, and durable nonces disabled.

At relaunch, Drift will migrate its settlement layer from USDC to USDT. Tether will provide a USDT market-making support facility via designated market makers to ensure liquidity from day one.

The Drift Insurance Fund remains unaffected and will be available to depositors upon relaunch. A bounty program with Arkham and Bybit is also in development to aid asset recovery.
