‘BTC still has room to catch up’: Bitcoin’s $80,000 breakout draws institutional demand as analysts weigh durability

Bitcoin's move above $80,000 is backed by heavy ETF and institutional inflows, according to K33, Nexo and Sygnum, but analysts disagree on whether the rally can be sustained.

Bitcoin's break above $80,000 has real demand behind it, analysts say, though the staying power of the move remains under scrutiny. The largest cryptocurrency tapped $86,000 earlier this week for the first time since January as crypto short liquidations accelerated, and it was trading near $83,800 at the time of publication.

Inflows are the central pillar of the bullish case. K33's Vetle Lunde noted in a Tuesday report that the market recorded its largest daily ETP inflow since November 2024, while Nexo pointed to close to $1 billion flowing into spot bitcoin ETFs. Sygnum also cited institutional and ETF demand as a key driver.

"BTC's current drawdown has been materially shallower and shorter than the major 2013, 2017, and 2021 bear markets, consistent with our expectations after a softer preceding bull cycle," Lunde wrote. He added that the cycle low appears already established, with neither derivatives positioning nor sentiment pointing to meaningful near-term downside, and that bitcoin still has room to catch up with gold and equities.

Regulatory tailwind

Stephen Coltman, macro head at 21shares, framed the SEC's Innovation Exemption and the CFTC's post-Clarity Act rulemaking as evidence that regulatory progress continues despite a setback in the Senate. The SEC last week opened a five-year relief window allowing trading venues, under certain conditions, to offer tokenized asset trading without registering as national securities exchanges or broker-dealers. Coltman said this has driven a surge of interest in protocols built around blockchain-based market-making and tokenized asset trading, alongside a broader recovery in crypto sentiment. K33 also argued that clarity on the Fed decision and the Clarity Act vote helped unlock the breakout.

Nexo struck a more cautious tone, flagging thinner volume, narrowing market breadth and less convincing derivatives positioning. It said leverage is rising but remains manageable, leaving bitcoin exposed to profit-taking or a pause. K33, by contrast, treats the move as confirmation that the cycle low is already behind the market.

On the macro side, Capital.com senior market analyst Daniela Hathorn said falling oil prices and Treasury yields are helping offset tighter Fed policy, while upcoming geopolitical developments could act as catalysts. She put immediate resistance at $87,000–$88,000, with $90,000 the next psychological hurdle, and warned that a failure to break higher could prompt profit-taking, with $84,000–$85,000 the first area to watch and $80,000 more significant below it. Fundstrat's Tom Lee said a crypto bull market began in late June, driven by a rotation from AI back to crypto, strengthening tokenization and AI-related fundamentals, and the end of the four-year cycle.
