Avanza Initiates International Expansion by Establishing Operations in Denmark

Swedish digital savings platform Avanza will enter Denmark by the second half of 2027, its first international market, backed by an initial SEK 120-150 million investment.

Avanza, Sweden's largest digital platform for savings and investments, has announced plans to establish operations in Denmark in the second half of 2027. The move marks the company's first international expansion, part of a strategy to become a leading European savings and investment platform.

Founded in 1999 and listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, Avanza serves over 2.2 million customers with more than SEK 1,000 billion in total savings capital. In late 2024, the company signalled its intention to enter at least one additional European country by 2030, and Denmark is now the first step in that plan.

CEO Gustaf Unger described Denmark as a natural starting point. "It is the second largest market in the Nordics and has a similar structure, competitive landscape, and culture to Sweden," he said. "Danes are financially literate and digitally mature, with a high propensity to switch providers for financial services." Avanza estimates the Danish expansion will grow its addressable market by approximately 70 percent, noting that median wealth in Denmark is more than double that of Sweden.

The establishment will be organic, with an initial investment of SEK 120-150 million until launch. About 20 percent of that amount will be capitalised, while the rest will be expensed, including SEK 50 million related to 2026. Costs include building a new, cloud-based technical platform. After launch, running costs excluding marketing are estimated at SEK 80 million annually, increasing over time. Marketing spend is projected at up to SEK 60 million per year during the first three years, then declining. Avanza expects to reach profitability approximately five years after launch.

Unger emphasised the company's cost-conscious approach, saying the new platform leverages lower software costs to offer flexibility in adapting to local savings cultures. "We are carrying out this initiative in classic Avanza fashion, with low risk-taking and high cost-consciousness," he added.

Avanza has won the Swedish Quality Index award for "Year's Most Satisfied Savings Customers" for 16 consecutive years. A dedicated website, go.avanza.se/dk, has been launched to provide updates on the Danish rollout.
