U.S. Student Loan Defaults Surge to 9.2 Million

The number of U.S. student loan defaults has risen sharply to 9.2 million, with one in five borrowers now in default, as collections resume and fears of a household debt crisis grow.

The U.S. student loan crisis is accelerating, with the number of defaulted borrowers jumping from 6 million to 9.2 million in recent months, according to reports. This means roughly one in five student loan borrowers is now in default.

The surge follows the resumption of student debt collections after a prolonged pause. The sharp increase is raising concerns about a broader household debt crisis, as millions of Americans fall behind on their payments.

Economists warn that the rising defaults could weigh on consumer spending and overall economic stability, particularly as other forms of household debt remain elevated.
