Retail investors dump US tech stocks at record pace
Retail investors sold $316 million of US-listed tech stocks on Wednesday, the largest single-day outflow on record, capping a three-day selling streak that dwarfed even pandemic-era exits.
Retail investors fled US technology shares on Wednesday, offloading a net $316 million – the biggest one-day sale in data going back to 2019. The selling accelerated a three-day outflow of $643 million, a record for any three-day window.
By comparison, the worst three-day stretch during the 2020 pandemic selloff never exceeded $200 million in tech outflows, underscoring the historic nature of the current rotation.
Overall single-stock sales by retail traders reached $243 million on Wednesday, the largest daily exit since 2020 and only the ninth net outflow day so far in 2026.
The back-to-back records highlight extreme swings in the tech sector amid shifting sentiment.
