EU Sanctions Reversal Lets TotalEnergies Sell Russian LNG to Asia

TotalEnergies can now bypass an impending ban and continue supplying Asian customers with liquefied natural gas from Russia’s Yamal mega-project, following a reversal of EU sanctions.

The French energy major TotalEnergies has secured a path to keep delivering Russian-sourced liquefied natural gas to Asian buyers despite a looming prohibition. An EU sanctions reversal now permits the company to bypass the restriction and maintain flows from the Yamal LNG facility in the Russian Arctic.

The Yamal project, a large-scale LNG operation, has been a critical source of supply for Asian markets. Without the policy change, TotalEnergies would have faced a halt in those shipments, potentially disrupting contracts and tightening global gas markets.

Details on the specific mechanism of the reversal are limited, but the move highlights the continued complexity of balancing energy security with sanctions policy. TotalEnergies has previously argued that long-term offtake agreements require the flexibility to serve Asian clients from Russian projects.
