China Secures Safe Passage for Oil Tankers Through Bab el-Mandeb Strait

China reportedly held direct talks with Yemen's Houthis to ensure safe transit for Chinese oil tankers through the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait, following threats to vessels linked to Saudi ports.

Chinese officials have engaged in direct discussions with Yemen’s Houthi movement to guarantee the safety of Chinese-flagged oil tankers navigating the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The talks came after the Iran-aligned group threatened ships associated with Saudi ports, raising risks for global energy transit.

The Bab el-Mandeb is a critical chokepoint for crude oil and petroleum product shipments from the Persian Gulf to European and Asian markets. Disruption there can quickly affect supply chains and crude prices. By securing a separate understanding, China aims to protect its energy imports amid regional tensions.

No details of the agreement were disclosed, but the move underscores Beijing’s capacity to conduct independent diplomacy with non-state actors to shield its strategic interests. The Houthis had previously launched attacks on vessels in the area, adding to maritime security concerns.
