BNY Strategists: Supercore Inflation Backs Tightening, July Move Still Likely

BNY’s John Velis and David Tam say elevated US supercore inflation supports further tightening, though they still expect a policy move in July.

BNY strategists John Velis and David Tam see stubbornly high US supercore inflation as a key argument for additional monetary tightening. The measure, which strips out volatile food, energy and shelter components, remains elevated and is shaping the Federal Reserve’s near-term path.

Despite the hawkish signal from supercore readings, the strategists still favor a July policy move. The snippet did not specify whether they lean toward a hike or another action, but their emphasis on supercore suggests continued pressure on the Fed to act.

Debates around inflation measurement are increasingly dictating the rate outlook, as policymakers scrutinize which price indicators best capture genuine demand-side pressures.
