Crypto market sentiment
Crypto fear and greed index
Two readings of crypto market sentiment on a 0 to 100 scale, side by side. Ours is built from futures positioning on Binance, Bybit and OKX (funding, long/short accounts, open interest, actual liquidations) plus Bitcoin volatility and momentum, and its method is published below. Next to it is the alternative.me index that most charts quote. Both update daily; neither is a trading signal.

What moves our index today
A component without enough history drops out and its weight is shared among the others. When less than half of the weight is available, the index is not published.
| Component | Weight | Reading | Score, 0 to 100 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin volatility | 20% | ×0,88 | 59 |
| Bitcoin momentum | 20% | 38,0 | 38 |
| Funding rate | 20% | +5,2% | 52 |
| Long/short accounts | 15% | 3,09 | 100 |
| Open interest, 7 days | 10% | -1,5% | 42 |
| Liquidations, 24 hours | 15% | 24,4% | 24 |
How our index is calculated
Each component is turned into a score from 0 (fear) to 100 (greed). The index is their weighted average, rounded to a whole number, recalculated every hour on the last 24 hours and closed once per UTC day.
Bitcoin volatility, 20%. Standard deviation of daily returns over 30 days divided by the same over 90 days. Volatility twice the usual scores 0, half the usual scores 100, normal scores 50: sharp swings come with fear.
Bitcoin momentum, 20%. RSI(14) on daily closes, already on a 0 to 100 scale.
Funding rate, 20%. Annualised funding across the tracked perpetual contracts on Binance, Bybit and OKX, weighted by each contract's open interest. The score is the percentile of today's value among the last 90 days: the highest funding of the period scores 100.
Long/short accounts, 15%. The ratio of accounts holding longs to accounts holding shorts on the same contracts, weighted the same way, scored as a 90-day percentile.
Open interest, 10%. The 7-day change in total open interest, counted only over contracts present on both days, scored as a percentile of 7-day changes over 90 days. Leverage piling in reads as greed.
Liquidations, 15%. The share of shorts in all liquidations published by the three exchanges over the last 24 hours. Shorts wiped out means the price is being pushed up; longs wiped out means the opposite. Below $1M of liquidations the share is noise and the component drops out.
Bands: 0 to 24 extreme fear, 25 to 44 fear, 45 to 55 neutral, 56 to 75 greed, 76 to 100 extreme greed. Percentile components need at least 14 days of their own history.
How it differs from alternative.me
The alternative.me index looks at Bitcoin alone and mixes in social media, search trends and dominance. Ours leaves out social and search data and instead reads how traders are positioned in futures: who pays funding, which side holds more accounts, whether leverage is being added and which side is being liquidated. Its inputs are the same series shown on our derivatives and liquidations pages.
What does the crypto fear and greed index measure?
It condenses how nervous or euphoric the market is into one number from 0 to 100. Low values mean traders are fearful: prices falling on high volatility, shorts paying to hold positions, longs being liquidated. High values mean the opposite.
Why do the two indexes show different numbers?
They read different things. alternative.me reacts to social media and search interest; ours reacts to leverage and positioning. A gap between them is itself information: the crowd online can stay calm while futures traders are already crowded on one side.
Can I trade on the fear and greed index?
Not on its own. Extreme readings show crowded sentiment, which can persist for weeks. Treat it as context next to price and your own risk rules.
Sentiment indexes describe the market, they do not predict it. Nothing on this page is investment advice.
