Houthis Threaten to Close Bab el-Mandeb Strait to Saudi-Linked Shipping

Yemen's Houthis said they have closed the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to Saudi-linked shipping in retaliation for the Saudi blockade and an attack on Sanaa airport, as reported by The Guardian.

Yemen's Houthi forces announced the closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to vessels linked to Saudi Arabia, according to a report by The Guardian. The move is framed as retaliation for the ongoing Saudi-led blockade on Yemen and a recent attack on the international airport in Sanaa, the rebel-held capital.

Bab el-Mandeb is a strategic chokepoint connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, through which a significant portion of global maritime trade and oil shipments pass. Any disruption risks higher shipping costs and potential supply chain delays.

The development adds to existing geopolitical tensions in the region, with the strait already a flashpoint due to Houthi attacks on ships during the Israel-Hamas war.
