SARB Holds Rate at 7%, Weighs on South African Rand – Commerzbank

Commerzbank notes the SARB's unexpected rate hold at 7% pressures the ZAR, especially after June inflation rose and Brent crude topped $100.

USDZAR

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) unexpectedly held its policy rate at 7%, according to Commerzbank analyst Volkmar Baur. The decision came as a negative surprise amid rising inflationary pressures, with June inflation climbing and Brent crude oil prices surpassing $100 per barrel.

Baur argues that the unchanged rate undermines the rand's attractiveness, particularly given the hawkish stance expected by markets. The combination of stubborn inflation and higher energy costs adds to the currency's headwinds against the US dollar.

Traders now watch for further guidance from the SARB. The USD/ZAR pair may see increased volatility in the near term.
