NFL Calls on CFTC to Ban Easy-to-Manipulate Sports Prediction Contracts
The National Football League urged the CFTC to ban sports prediction contracts that could be influenced by a single person, such as bets on a kicker missing a field goal or a quarterback’s first pass being inaccurate.
The NFL has formally asked the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to prohibit certain sports prediction contracts, arguing they are too susceptible to manipulation by one individual. Examples cited include contracts on a kicker missing a field goal or a quarterback throwing an inaccurate first pass.
The league also proposed additional safeguards: a ban on trading based on non-public information, the creation of lists barring specific individuals from accessing certain markets, and a minimum participant age of 21. In the NFL’s view, the current draft rules do not go far enough to protect both the integrity of competitions and users.
