Energy Shock Weakens Japanese Yen, USD/JPY Hits Fresh YTD Highs – MUFG

MUFG analyst Lee Hardman notes that rising oil and natural gas prices are pressuring the Japanese yen, pushing USD/JPY to new year-to-date highs.

MUFG's Lee Hardman highlights that the ongoing energy shock, driven by rising oil and natural gas prices, is weighing on the Japanese yen. The currency has weakened further, with USD/JPY reaching fresh year-to-date highs above the previous levels.

Hardman points out that Japan's heavy reliance on energy imports makes the yen particularly vulnerable to such price spikes. The current trend suggests continued pressure on the yen unless energy prices moderate or the Bank of Japan shifts its policy stance.
