Dusting Attacks on Ethereum and BNB Chain: 270M Attempts, $83.8M Damage

Carnegie Mellon University's CyLab recorded 270 million dusting attack attempts on Ethereum and BNB Chain from July 2022 to June 2024, affecting 17 million wallets with over $83.8 million in confirmed losses. Following the Fusaka upgrade, USDT dust transfers surged 612%.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's CyLab identified 270 million dusting attack attempts across Ethereum and BNB Chain between July 2022 and June 2024. The attacks targeted 17 million wallets, with confirmed financial damage exceeding $83.8 million.

After the Fusaka network upgrade, the volume of USDT dust transfers jumped by 612%, according to the same study. Dusting attacks come in two main forms: one aimed at de-anonymizing wallet owners, and another designed to steal funds directly.

The report highlights the persistent threat of low-value transactions (dust) used to trace or compromise wallets. No specific recommended actions are included in the research.
