North Korea IT Specialists Arrested for Laundering State Funds Through Crypto

North Korean authorities have arrested a group of IT specialists for hacking the central bank and a trade bank to steal state funds, then moving the money via small crypto transfers to foreign wallets and exchanging them for cash dollars and yuan at the border.

The arrested individuals allegedly breached internal networks of the Central Bank of the DPRK and the Bank of Foreign Trade. Stolen funds were withdrawn in small tranches to overseas crypto wallets, converted through Chinese brokers, and ultimately exchanged for US dollars and Chinese yuan at border checkpoints.

Investigators say the scheme was orchestrated by retired military personnel from intelligence cyber units, who recruited graduates of the country’s technical universities to execute the hacks.

The operation was uncovered after currency payment discrepancies and logins from foreign IP addresses raised red flags.
