Markets See 30% Chance of Fed Hike, Hawkish Shift Could Lift EUR/GBP Rates

Traders assign a 30% probability to a Federal Reserve rate hike at the upcoming meeting, a scenario that could jolt sentiment. Even a hawkish hold could push front-end EUR and GBP rates higher.

Market pricing implies a roughly 30% chance that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates at its next decision, even though many analysts view a hike as unlikely. The front end of euro and sterling interest-rate markets could extend recent moves higher if the Fed adopts a hawkish stance, regardless of whether it actually hikes.

A surprise rate increase or a shift in the dot plot toward a longer period of elevated rates would likely trigger a further repricing in short-term EUR and GBP yields. This reflects the tight link between Fed expectations and European money-market rates.

Traders are closely monitoring the FOMC statement and updated economic projections for clues on the policy path. Even without a hike, a firmly hawkish message could keep upward pressure on front-end rates across the Atlantic.
