Insider Buying Ratio Sinks to 21-Year Low, Signaling Executive Caution

Only 14.8% of US companies recorded more insider purchases than sales in July, the lowest share in at least 21 years, as broad-based caution grips corporate suites.

The measure has plunged 12 percentage points since February and now sits roughly 7 points below its 10-year average of about 25%. By contrast, nearly 44% of firms saw insider purchases exceed sales in January 2022.

Just three sectors—consumer staples, materials, and utilities—posted net executive buying. Among large-cap companies specifically, a mere 3.2% recorded net purchases.

The pervasive decline reflects deepening corporate caution without any single sector offsetting the trend.
