Central bank gold buying accelerated in May, with total purchases reaching 41 tonnes, the highest monthly figure since November 2025. This follows 17 tonnes acquired in April and is the third monthly purchase this year.

Poland was the top buyer for the second straight month, adding 18 tonnes. This brings Poland's year-to-date gold purchases to 64 tonnes, pushing its official reserves to a record 614 tonnes.

China added 10 tonnes, its largest monthly addition since December 2024. Chinese gold reserves now stand at a record 2,331 tonnes, representing 9% of total foreign exchange reserves—near an all-time high. This is the 20th consecutive month of Chinese central bank gold purchases.

Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan also added 9 tonnes and 7 tonnes, respectively, contributing to the overall surge in official sector demand.
