China Orders Japanese Survey Ships to Halt East China Sea Operations

China warned two Japanese Coast Guard survey vessels to stop maritime surveys in the disputed East China Sea, prompting a formal protest from Japan. The unusual back-to-back warnings underscore rising friction between Asia's two largest economies over territorial claims.

China issued warnings to two Japanese Coast Guard survey vessels, ordering them to cease maritime surveys in the East China Sea—a region where both countries claim overlapping Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) rights. Japan responded by lodging a formal diplomatic protest.

The incidents occurred back-to-back, an unusual pattern that highlights growing tension between the two economies. The dispute is part of a broader conflict over maritime boundaries and the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, which Japan controls but China claims.

This episode follows increased Chinese coast guard activity near Taiwan and the East China Sea, signaling Beijing's continued use of so-called "gray-zone" tactics to reinforce its territorial assertions without crossing a direct military threshold.
