Japanese Bond Yields Pose Bigger Market Threat Than Oil or Hormuz

While traders react to oil and geopolitical tensions, Japanese government bond yields are the overlooked risk with potential to trigger a liquidity-driven market event.

Geopolitical flashpoints like the Strait of Hormuz and a crude spike to $120 often dominate trading screens, but a larger danger may be brewing in the Japanese government bond market. The real threat, according to the analysis, is not a commodity shock but a liquidity crisis sparked by rising yields.

History shows that the most severe market dislocations begin when liquidity evaporates, not when oil prices surge. Previous episodes of vanishing depth in core sovereign bond markets have had cascading effects across global risk assets.

The warning highlights that focus on crude and Middle East tensions may be distracting from the more potent risk of a JGB sell-off, which could upend rate differentials, currency markets, and investor positioning.
