China Denies Meeting Between Foreign Ministers Wang Yi and Japan’s Counterpart in Manila

Beijing’s foreign ministry spokesperson stated no meeting or brief exchange took place between China’s Wang Yi and the Japanese foreign minister in Manila last week, contradicting earlier reports.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian denied reports that Foreign Minister Wang Yi met or had any brief exchange with the Japanese foreign minister during his stay in Manila last week. The statement was issued in response to media claims that a short conversation had occurred on the sidelines of a regional gathering.

The denial highlights persistent diplomatic friction between the two Asian powers. No further details were provided about Wang Yi’s schedule in the Philippine capital.
