Central bank buying offsets gold ETF outflows in Q2 2026, ING says

Global gold demand was flat year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026 at 1,269 tonnes, as strong central bank purchases balanced a decline in ETF investment, according to ING.

ING’s commodities team reported that total gold demand held steady in Q2 2026 at 1,269 tonnes, unchanged from the same period a year earlier. Robust buying by central banks offset weaker exchange-traded fund flows.

Central bank purchases remained a key pillar of demand, continuing the trend of official sector accumulation. At the same time, investment in gold-backed ETFs contracted, acting as a drag on the total.

The flat overall figure suggests that physical demand for the metal is resilient, supported by institutional and sovereign interest even as some investor segments pull back.
