Same-side opening auctions and pair use of capital

The historical opening-only procedure participated only when designated opener accommodation was expected, and only on the same side of the imbalance. After the open, pair inventory was framed as use of firm capital to wait for convergence.

  • Resting displayed orders left for rebates received fewer fills after faster orders stepped ahead in the queue, and the described routing change favored taking bids or offers on the primary listing venue.
  • A listed share has one auction print at the open and one at the close, and opening interest mixes market-on-open orders with opening-only limits.
  • The opening-only procedure participates only when designated opener accommodation is expected, and only on the same side of the imbalance.
  • After the open, about a dozen same-sector pairs held overnight were framed as use of firm capital to wait for convergence, not as conventional margin leverage.

From rebate parking to the listing venue

Resting displayed orders left on electronic networks to collect rebates received fewer fills after faster orders stepped ahead in the queue. The described routing change favored taking bids or offers on the primary listing venue rather than parking for a rebate.

One open print and two order types

A listed share has one auction print at the open and one auction print at the close. Opening interest includes market-on-open orders that accept any auction print and opening-only limits that require a stated price or better.

Designated opener accommodation

When preopen buy interest near the prior close exceeds sell interest, the designated opener must work higher prices on the electronic book and may sell its own shares if the print moves far enough. The opening-only procedure participates only when that opener accommodation is expected, and only on the same side of the imbalance.

A worked opening session

In the worked session, shorts at a fair-value opening range and buys at a wider envelope were placed in 30 names at 2,000 shares each, using about $5 million of firm capital, with an expected fill rate near one in ten.

Same-sector pairs after the open

After the open, the workflow switched to same-sector pairs that tend to move together and to trade as a spread that diverges and reconverges. Holding about a dozen such pairs overnight was framed as using firm capital to wait for convergence, not as conventional margin leverage.

Posted capital and the firm line

Traders posted about $25,000 of their own capital while being allowed to use a much larger firm line, described as perhaps $1 million or more, only for working procedures. Size was to be raised only after those procedures were understood.
