Yen Needs Hawkish BoJ Shift to Strengthen Against Dollar, Says BNY's Yu

The Bank of Japan is widely expected to leave rates unchanged, but BNY's Geoff Yu warns that without a clearer tightening signal the yen will remain under pressure near multi-decade lows against the US dollar.

The Bank of Japan is set to keep interest rates on hold at its upcoming meeting, a decision fully anticipated by markets. However, according to BNY's Geoff Yu, that status quo will do little to halt the yen's slide unless policymakers deliver a more explicit hawkish message.

Yu emphasizes that the Japanese currency is trading near multi-decade troughs against the US dollar. "Markets need a clearer tightening signal," he states, noting that mere rate stability is insufficient to reverse the yen's persistent weakness.

The call highlights growing frustration among investors who see incremental BoJ communications as inadequate in the face of wide US-Japan rate differentials. A concrete shift in forward guidance or an unexpected policy adjustment may be the only near-term catalyst to support the yen.
