ING’s Pesole: BoE Pause Risks Dovish Repricing as Vote Split Narrows

Francesco Pesole of ING expects the Bank of England to hold rates steady this week, but warns of a dovish tilt if Catherine Mann joins the existing dissenters.

GBPUSD

Francesco Pesole of ING expects the Bank of England to leave interest rates unchanged at this week’s policy meeting, with the vote split remaining 7–2 as a base case. However, he flags a risk: Catherine Mann could join Huw Pill and Megan Greene in supporting a rate cut, narrowing the majority and injecting a more dovish tone.

The potential shift would likely fuel a dovish repricing of sterling markets. With two members already on the side of loosening, a third voice in favor could amplify expectations of an earlier pivot, even if the headline decision is a pause.

The British pound remains sensitive to these nuances, as markets currently price a cautious BOE. A 6–3 vote or a more balanced statement would reinforce bets on near-term easing, weighing on GBP in the short term.
