S&P 500 Options Volume Hits Record, Triples Since 2022

The 10-day moving average of S&P 500 options volume has reached a record ~5.5 million contracts, more than tripling since 2022, while Euro Stoxx 50 options volume remains flat, widening the gap between US and European options activity.

Risk appetite is surging to historic levels, as evidenced by the 10-day moving average of S&P 500 options volume hitting a record ~5.5 million contracts. This figure has more than tripled since 2022.

In contrast, Euro Stoxx 50 options volume has remained roughly unchanged near ~1 million contracts over the same period. As a result, US options volumes are now more than five times larger than those in Europe. Before 2022, options activity in these two markets moved in tandem.

The unprecedented boom in US options market activity underscores a clear divergence in investor risk appetite between the US and Europe.
